LABS 2010:
A Day of Bonsai in Baton Rouge
On Saturday, 17 July 2010 we traveled to Waddill Wildlife Refuge in Baton Rouge to attend LABS 2010 hosted by the Louisiana Bonsai Society. Lowell Tilley and the LBS crew put on a fun day of bonsai which was well attended by members of every bonsai club in the state as well as Mississippi. Featured artists were Guy Guidry and Joe Day.
We also had several vendors with a huge array of bonsai goods, including Greg LeBlanc of Black Bayou Bonsai here in Lake Chares, Byron Myrick of Moselle, MS, Allen Roach of Bonsai Mart in Pensacola, FL, Rob Fifield of Hickory Grove Nursery & Landscaping in Montgomery, AL, and a number of large potensai from LCBS which all sold!
LCBS Attendees: Don Pearson, Lisa Corley, Gene Lanclos, & Dennis Corley.
Lowell Tilley of LBS began with his presentation on Crape Myrtle Bonsai.
Next, Guy Guidry presented a demonstration and talk on juniper bonsai. Guy had three junipers from which to choose, and he made the art of choosing part of the learning experience.

After a nice lunch which was included in the $10 fee, we were treated to a presentation by Joe Day on Applying John Naka's Bonsai Techniques. (Since I was running the PowerPoint for several speakers, I didn't get to take any photos of their presentations.)
This was followed by LCBS's own vice-president and newsletter editor, Don Pearson, with a talk on Bonsai Soil.
Johnny Hardcastle and Boyd Snellgrove gave a great presentation on Air Layering.
Patrick LaNasa of the Mississippi-Gulf Coast Bonsai Society shared a video presentation he had produced on the North Carolina Bonsai Expo and Exhibit Bonsai from 2009.
The final presenter was Mitch Thomas of Eden Isles near Slidell who is a member of MSGCBS. Mitch showed us how he had made a very nice penjing of trees from a single tree he had obtained at the GNOBS auction last year. Very impressive work in such a short time!
The program concluded with raffle drawings and announcement of the winner of the Vaughn Banting Award (VBA) for 2010. This year's winner was Dawn Koetting of the Bonsai Society of Acadiana in Lafayette for her excellent shohin display.

LCBS Day of Bonsai with Guy Guidry, Saturday, 23 May 2009
The day began with an information packed lecture and demonstration of the techniques of air-layering by Guy. He demonstrated on a large trident maple and also had examples of other air-layer subjects.

After the lecture-demo it was time to eat. We had anything you could want for our picnic, because everyone contributed! With our tummies full, we then had our annual auction. In the past we have traditionally held the auction in November. After years of declining revenues, we decided to move it to May this year, and it was very successful. We raised more than double what we had last November and are now set for another year to bring in guest artists like Guy. A win-win situation!
